C.E. Lockhart's Father Buried At Stephenville
STEPHENVILLE, April 29. - Funeral services were held Sunday for J.T. (Uncle Johnnie) Lockhart, 96, Civil War veteran, and for 63 years a citizen of Erath County, who died at his home here Saturday.
He was born in Georgia, where he lived until he was nearly 16, when he joined the Confederate Army. He served with the Alabama Volunteers and was in the last battle near Mobile, Alabama. Fighting had stopped in other sections, but the word had not reached his unit.
Shortly after the Civil War was over, he married Miss Eliza Perry and in 1872, he and his family moved to Texas, settling at Oak Dale, near Stephenville. He has lived near or in Stephenville since that time. Mrs. Eliza Lockhart died some years after moving to Erath County, and in 1890, he married Miss Tennie Mefferd, who survives.
He was the father of 18 children. Those living are C.E. Lockhart, Memphis, Texas; Joe Lockhart, Balmorhea; Kenneth Lockhart, Portland, Tenn.; J.E. Lockhart, Clifton; and Mrs. L.L. Steele, Mexia.
He was the a brother of former State Treasurer Charley Lockhart and Jim Lockhart, Snyder; Mrs. Lou English and Ben Lockhart, Fort Worth; Mrs. Lizzie Cargale, Wichita Falls, and Mrs. Julia Coffey, Webber Falls, Okla.
He was a Baptist, Master Mason and Odd Fellow.
