Civil War Union Major General. He was a physician practicing medicine in Ohio and later in Kansas, where he became associated with John Brown in antislavery activity. With the advent of the Civil War, he joined the Union Army and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Kansas Volunteer Regiment. In April 1862, he was commissioned Brigadier General in command of the Department and Army of Kansas. His Army of Kansas was incorporated into the Army of the Frontier as the 1st Division and he led his corps to victories at the Battles of Old Fort Wayne, Cane Hill and Prairie Grove. On March 16, 1863, he was promoted Major General in command of the District of the Frontier and won a victory at the Battle of Honey Springs. He led the 1st Division to victories in Missouri, at the Battles of Westport, 2nd Newtonia and was in command of the District of South Kansas when the war ended. After the war, he resumed his medical practice; he also was admitted to the Kansas bar as a lawyer in 1869. He moved to Washington D.C. and practiced until his death at age 55.
