Momma's Life Sketch -
Katharyn Lula Inez Shoemaker Weston was born October 12, 1930, in Los Almos, California to Charles "Walter" Shoemaker and Violet "Pearl" Clark Shoemaker. She was born at home because her mother couldn't make it to the hospital to give birth to her. She is the sister to Myrton "Myrt" Charles Shoemaker and twin boy & girl Shoemaker that died at birth. When she was in elementary school she thought they got out of school just for her birthday, but in reality it was Columbus Day.
She grew up a in a very small town in California. At the age of 1½ years old she had an heavy iron, iron dropped on her head when she bumped into an ironing board. This caused an infection that required her to be hospitalized for some time. She was in a catholic hospital and the sisters loved her. She told me that while she was in the hospital she used to sing a song in her crib and it went: "Monkey in a cage and can't get out; monkey in a cage and can't get out." When she was a teenager she used to like to wear rolled up denims that were popular for the time. Her grandmother didn't like the un-lady-like look and told her she must wear a skirt. She wore a skirt all right over her denims, right down to the gas station on the corner where took the skirt off and put it somewhere she could retrieve it and put it back on over her denims when she went home. Also, when my mother was a teen, she and her friends would put potatoes in exhaust pipes of cars. Then they would go and hide until the driver can out and started the car. The potato in the exhaust pipe would cause the car to make a huge "KABOOM" and she and her friends would run off giggling all the way.
The summer of her senior year of high school, 1948, she was staying with her Aunt Lillian. One day she saw my Daddy, her companion for eternity, and fell instantly head over heels for him. She was on her horse when he went by in his little blue car and as he drove by she craned her head and body so far that she fell off her horse. She got up and dusted herself off and went back to her aunt's house and asked who that really cute boy was. Her aunt said, "That's Larry Weston. He lives across the creek. Do you want to meet him? He'll be playing softball with Uncle Don on Saturday." Well, they met and fell in love. Daddy said that she was his Elizabeth Taylor. After they graduated high school they were married on July 1, 1949, in Yuma, Arizona. They eloped because her sister-in-law Betty put her wedding dress on just days before the wedding. This was so her sister-in-law and her brother Myrt could have wedding pictures also. She told her parents that she would not wear a dress someone else had already worn; so Katharyn and Larry eloped.
In 1950, Katharyn and Larry were blessed with their first child, a daughter. Larry served in the Korean War during this time and Katharyn and their daughter lived in Los Almos with her parents, grandmother, and her Aunt Lula. After the war, Katharyn was expecting their second child but unfortunately he did not survive. In 1954, Katharyn and Larry were blessed with their third child, another girl (me). In 1957, they were blessed with their only son. Then in 1958, they were blessed with their final child, another girl. Their little family was complete.
Katharyn was an exceptional and spunky mother. She always put her children's needs before her own and stuck-up for them when they were in the right. She worked hard to make their home a wonderful place to be. When there was little money, Katharyn would make her children clothing that would revile any department store or dress shop. When there was little money for food, Katharyn would make something out of nothing and it always tasted great. She made the absolute best chocolate chip cookies and once even made ice cream out of snow that had fallen in our front yard (snow never falls in our part of the world)!! She was a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker!!
Katharyn and Larry were huge sports fans. They especially liked the Lakers, the Angels, and the Dodgers. They would sometimes travel to Los Angeles and Anaheim to watch baseball games. They also enjoyed golf on television and on the course and golfed together as much as time would permit. Katharyn's favorite golfer was Tiger Woods.
Katharyn loved to garden. Her favorite flowers are roses, irises, and violets – she grew beautiful flowers. While her children were in elementary school each Valentine's Day Katharyn would make a nosegay of violets for each of their teachers. Lavender or purple was her favorite color of flower.
Katharyn loved Elvis music and movies. Her favorite was "Blue Hawaii". In the 1960's some friends let us borrow their reel to reel tape recorder. Katharyn thought it would be fun to sing the "Wedding Song" from "Blue Hawaii" on it. Needless to say she hit a few sour notes and was embarrassed by her performance but didn't know how to erase the tape. She had to wait for Larry to get home from work to erase it. I remember us listening to it and my Daddy letting out a little giggle (by accident) and my Momma giving him a light whack on the arm. Then we all started to laugh including Momma. She was a good sport!
Katharyn spent much of her time volunteering in various charities. Her favorites were girl scouts and boy scouts, the PTA, the Peter Pan special needs school, and her most favorite was working at the Guild House that benefited the Henrietta Weil Guidance Center for children. At the Guild House she would cook, order the food for the week, waitress, and, her favorite, plan the wedding receptions. She gave her all to each and every charity and passed the love of charity work onto her children!
She was also a member of Eastern Stars where she held many positions -- one being a Worthy Matron.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions in the church from stake Relief Society to ward nursery. She considered each one a blessing. She loved to feed the missionaries and she always made her famous Butterfingers Pie for them.
She was a resident of Kern County for over 56 years.
Katharyn and Larry were married for nearly 57 years and were blessed not only with their 4 children, but also they were blessed to have 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren all of which they loved and cherished each in their own way.
Katharyn taught her children and grandchildren grace and beauty and what it means to be a good person and a wonderful life partner!
Thank you Momma for all you've done for us and for all you've taught us. You have been a wonderful example of a mother and human being and you are loved and missed more than you will ever, ever know!! Your fight with Alzheimer's Disease is over!!!
