Rose Gavin was born on December 6, 1892 on a her fathers homestead three miles southwest of Willow Lake, South Dakota. Rose was the youngest child of George and Mary Gavin. Katie was the oldest sister and James her brother. The Gavin family moved to the town of Willow Lake in 1904. Rose attended school, and graduated from Willow Lake High School in 1913. She met her future husband Wendell at high school, and followed his champion baseball season of 1910. Wendell move with his family to Rochester, Minnesota in 1913. He returned to Willow Lake on June 5, 1915 and married Rose Gavin in an early morning ceremony. On the same day, she and Wendell returned to Rochester, which she affectionately called the "Honeymoon Farm".
Grandpa Wendell and Grandma Rosie made quite the couple. Grandma was into the new styles and playing Bridge at Kahler Hotel in Rochester and Grandpa was into baseball and bowling. But both had a love of dancing at the Elks in Rochester on Saturday nights. The family joined them on St Patrick's day. (Everyone had to be wearing green!) They also went to the Elks for Thanksgiving, and for Tom and Jerrys on New Year's Eve where the grownups would dance into the New Year. You did not miss these dates for she would remember them always!
One event Grandma Rosie celebrated every year was her birthday kick. She would have a supper with family and friends and then she would go to the front of table and kick her leg over her head to show that she was still young . This was an occurrence every year, until she was in her late eighties. Also grandma was a strong Minnesota Twin's fan. If they were playing a game, no matter where, or what was going on, she would turn the radio up. You COULD NOT TALK until the game was over. If you wanted to talk you had to move to another room.
The grandparents had a screened in porch and unless it was winter, you would sit and and listen to the birds sing while you talked. Grandma could tell you what kind of bird was singing by its song. Grandpa would be in the chair next to her and would feed a red squirrel everyday. It was peaceful except on baseball game day.
Rose Gavin Erbes died May 21, 1986. Rosie's husband and sons William and Robert and a grandson Patrick preceded her in death. She is survivied by daughters in law, Mrs. William (Tillie) Erbes and Mrs. Robert (Marjorie) Erbes, 3 granddaughters Marilyn, Jane and Patricia, and 6 grandsons Thomas, William, Patrick, Allan, Daniel and James.
