American Diplomat, Author and Academic. He graduated from Bucknell University in 1874 and stayed at the college as a Professor of Rhetoric. He received his master's degree in 1878 and studied at the Universities of Berlin and Paris. Hill received his ordination as a Baptist Minister in 1879, and was President of Bucknell from 1879 to 1888. He was Professor of International Law and President of the University of Rochester from 1888 to 1896 and studied at Paris's School of Political Science in 1888 and 1897. He was then a Professor of European Diplomacy at George Washington University. Recognized as America's foremost academic expert of the late 1800s on European foreign relations, he began a diplomatic career when he was appointed Assistant Secretary of State 1898, and he frequently served as Acting Secretary of State during the absences of John Hay. He was subsequently appointed Minister to Switzerland in 1903, Minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg in 1905 and Minister to Germany from 1908 to 1911. Beginning in the 1870s he was the author of more than 20 books on foreign policy, religion, psychology and biography. In 1922 he received France's Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor, and his other awards included honorary degrees from Colgate University, Union University (New York), the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Geneva.
