Obituary: The Vermont Phoenix, Brattleboro, 4 January, 1907

Eugene C. Stiles, whose death was recorded last week, was the son of Orrin and Lucy Wakefield Stiles, who lived a few years in Newfane after many years in Wardsboro, where a family of nine brothers and sisters were raised, besides two half brothers, Lewis Goodnow, late of Watertown, NY, and Charles Stiles, who was a "forty-niner" in San Francisco at the time of the great gold excitement. The sole survivor in the large family is Franklin O. Stiles, of the hardware, stove and plumbing business, who has for years been identified with the growth of Troy, NY. A sister, Calista, died in this town, another, Fidelia, in Wardsboro, and a third sister, Mrs. Lydia Miranda Davis, who died in Rhode Island, was well known as a contributor of poetry to the Universalist Banner.
In all that large family there is now no male descendant to bear the name of Stiles except Franklin, already mentioned, who lost his only son by drowning last summer.
E.C. Stiles married in 1873 Miss Eliza Patch, and the couple lived here 33 years.
Mr. Stiles graduated from Albany Business College. He was exact, faithful and honest in conducting business. He was secretary of the Windham County Agricultural Society in its last years, secretary and business manager of the County Creamery Association two years, Agent for the Vermont Mutual Fire Insurance Company 18 years, and held various town offices. He was elected trustee and a member of the Board of Investment of the Windham County Savings Bank, but declined to accept the responsibilities of that position. For about two years he was a sufferer from paralysis. The funeral was held in the Congregationalist Church on Sunday... Burial was in the Patch lot in the village cemetery. Out-of-town friends present were the brother, Franklin O. Stiles, Mrs. Stiles's sisters, Mrs. Elvira Taylor of Medford, Mass., and Mrs. J.M. Miller, J.M. Miller, Dr. and Mrs. George Roberts, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Miller and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Ware, all of Brattleboro, besides Mrs. Stiles' brother, Albert Patch, of Medford, who is a veteran of the Fifth Vermont Regiment.
