Animal Figure. A 4000-pound hippopotamus, Bubbles won national attention in late February 1978 when she escaped from a wild animal park (the now-defunct Lion Country Safari) in Irvine, California. Finding refuge in a rain-filled pond, she eluded capture for 19 days. Bubbles was finally taken down with tranquilizer darts. Tragically, she collapsed in an unnatural position, and died from suffocation. An autopsy revealed she was five months pregnant. Her skull and bones are located in the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County warehouse, where the skeletons of specimens are stored when not on display.
