Arthur was the son of Robert Kersey (1802-1862) and Sarah Mitchell Kersey (1805-1897). Robert and Sarah moved from Union County, South Carolina to Upson County, Georgia around 1835. They were the parents of 14 children. Arthur married Caroline Elizabeth Partridge on August 31, 1869 in Upson County, Georgia. They had four children.
