Carrol Warren Libby, 82, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2013 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Carrol was the fifth child of seven, born to Vernon Libby and Arneta Warren Libby in Hampden, Maine on June 10, 1931. He graduated from Hermon High School in 1949 and Park College Kansas in 1976. He joined the Air Force in 1951 and retired in 1980, having attained the highest enlisted rank in the Air Force as Chief Master Sergeant. He proudly served in the Great Lakes, Niagara Falls, Washington DC, Turkey, the Isle of Crete, Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, Pleiku, Vietnam, Alaska, Alamogordo, New Mexico, Spangdahlem, Germany, and Sheppard Air Force Base. He began his career as a dental technician and moved up as supervisor of three dental clinics; he then became a First Sergeant and one of his proudest moments was when he was the First Sergeant of the Security Forces in Pleiku. He was asked to start the Leadership School in Alamogordo NM in 1971, which he did and where he was named the first commandant. He also was the Senior Enlisted Advisor of the 49TFW in 1973 in Alamogordo NM. He attained the title of Senior Enlisted Advisor in Germany in 1976 of the 52TFW. He loved to tell the stories of his military tours and remember the occasional foreign phase. He also retired from Civil Service as a Master Instructor in 1992. Carrol served as the Treasurer of St John the Divine in Burkburnett and as Senior and Junior Warden at St Stephen's Wichita Falls. He was a member of the Lynde Masonic Lodge #174 of Hermon Maine for 50 years.
Carrol married Virginia "Ginny" Lindsay in Bangor, Maine November 22, 1951. Ginny and their son, Carrol Jr. died in an automobile accident in May 1978. He married Marie Wethington in December 1978. They built their life around their family, church and many friendships as Carrol never met a stranger. Ginny and Marie had many a new faces around their tables at holiday meals and any occasion that called for a friendly gathering. Carrol was a good cook and reveled in trying new recipes along with the old family ones. He took up golfing in the summer of 1978 and played until this past spring. He had a rock hard demeanor, but was a gentle giving man, and his life was filled with the love and joy of his family and friends.
Carrol leaves behind his devoted wife, Marie; daughters, Joan and Walter Eanes of Alamogordo, NM, Julie and Jim Luca of Augusta, GA, Judith Taber of Wichita Falls, and Maggie Libby Davis and Donnie of Norfolk, VA; son, Christopher Libby of Richardson; grandsons, Warren and Kellene Eanes, Matthew and Kristy Eanes, Mikel Luca, Steven Taber, and David and Hillary Taber; granddaughters, Sarah (Eanes) and Shawn Dozier, Ginny (Luca) and Jeremy Campbell, and Robin and Rachel Libby; great-grandchildren, Charlotte Rees, Wednesday Eanes, Garrett and Owen Dozier, Libby, Luca, and Jude Campbell, Andrew TAber, and Alyx and Daniel Taber. He also leaves a sister, Avis Karitis of Panama City, FL; sisters-in-law, Ruth Libby of Bangor, Maine, and Fran Libby of Benbrook; and many nieces and nephews and their spouses and children from Maine to Florida to Texas and Washington to Alaska.
Carrol was preceded in death by his first wife, Ginny and son, Carrol Jr.; his parents, Vernon and Arneta; four brothers, Edward, Adrian, Linwood, and Vern; and a sister, Arneta.
A memorial service honoring Carrol's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2013 at St Stephen's Episcopal Church with The Very Reverend John D. Payne, officiating. Inurnment will follow at a later date in the Church's Columbarium. Arrangements are under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.
