Her maiden name was Elizabeth Driggs, the daughter of Daniel Driggs (1721-1798) and Elizabeth Strickland. Her first husband, Roswell Graves, was a patriot of the American Revolution. He was captured at the Battle of Long Island and starved to death in a British POW prison in New York city. A story is told of Elizabeth that she went to the British commander in charge to beg for the body of her husband so she could take him home for burial, but it was too late; he was already buried in a mass grave. She was left with five children to bring up, and did not remarry until 1790.
