A number of relatives--both Allens and Clevengers who were native Virginians, including some who spent time in Cocke County--had moved to the Missouri Territory to take advantage of generous homesteading opportunities. Among them were 3 of Elsie's brothers. Reuben and Elsie decided around 1817 to make that westward journey with their family.
Reuben and Elsie's graves are not marked. But at least 4 of their children--Abraham, Isaac, Thomas and George--have marked graves in this apparently forsaken cemetery. An area Find-A-Grave contributor reports, "I have been to the Old Allen (Dillon) Cemetery a couple of times and it is sad to see it in its present condition."
Elsie's brother Richard is buried in the Old New Garden Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery; brother Jesse, in the abandoned Elitzer Cemetery in Clay County.
[A personal note: Elsie and Reuben's son Abraham was my father's 2nd-great grandfather. Elsie's parents were my mother's 3rd-great grandparents. Elsie and Reuben have left many distant relatives in Missouri and elsewhere that I will never know. In the summer of 1964, though, I drove my parents from northeastern Tennessee to northwestern Missouri to meet and visit some of our distant cousins, none of whom is still living. --Gene Bryant]
