John was born circa 1855. He married Miss Emily Hunter on December 8, 1884 in Los Angeles County, and they became the parents of three children -- Willie, Johnnie, and baby Edna. John had been a police officer for three years in Los Angeles but lost his job due to incompetence. He had been working for the street department for about a year. He was also a deputy US marshal and a deputy constable. On July 25, 1894, two months after Emily filed for divorce, John shot and killed her, and almost killed his brother-in-law George Hunter at the same time. John then drove across town where he shot and killed his former in-laws and Emily's parents, William and Mary Hunter. He attempted suicide at that point but was unsuccessful. After a lengthy trial followed by an unsuccessful appeal, John was executed at Folsom State Prison. As he stood at the gallows, he spotted his former brother-in-law, Joseph Hunter, in the audience and called out, "Oh Joe, I love you!" And that was the last of John Craig.
