Family and friends will gather this morning at a memorial Mass in Roseville for Taunie Snyder - a shocking detour from the 17th birthday they had planned to celebrate Thursday.
Snyder, a beginning driver, was killed Saturday night in a mysterious single-car crash on a thin rural stretch of Walerga Road in south Placer County, two miles from her Roseville home.
Passenger Cory Camacho, 17, of Citrus Heights also was killed. Camacho's cousin, 14-year-old Robert Hilario of Carmichael, suffered numerous injuries and is being treated at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.
California Highway Patrol officials said Tuesday that Hilario was awake and alert but reportedly does not remember the crash. CHP officials are asking for help from any witnesses who may have seen a 1991 Honda Accord in the area of the crash about 9:20 p.m.
Snyder's mother, Deidra Felso, said Tuesday she doesn't know what happened Saturday night and wonders if she'll ever know.
Her daughter, a Woodcreek High School junior, was a responsible person and driver, she said. She always wore her seat belt, and, as far as her mother knew, she never sped.
All three in the car Saturday night were wearing seat belts, CHP officials said. CHP officials, however, say they believe the car was speeding when it veered off the road, up a berm and into two trees.
As a beginning driver, Snyder legally was not allowed to have passengers younger than 20. Her mother said she had reminded her of that more than once.
Snyder had gone to the Galleria at Roseville on Saturday evening to buy shoes for her birthday. She called her mother on the cell phone shortly after 9 p.m. to say she she had run into Camacho, whom she knew from church, and Hilario and that they were hanging out.
What happened then, "we have no clue," Felso said.
Felso said she doesn't know the other two families and hasn't talked to them but wants to. "I'd tell them how sorry I was. I know the emptiness they feel.
