Charles R. Siebrasse, 61, of DeKalb, Ill.,
passed away Thursday, Feb. 5,
2009, at Kish-waukee Community Hospital.
He was born March 13, 1947, in DeKalb, the son of Earl and Neva (Fraedrich) Siebrasse. Charles married Kathy Vance on March 8, 1980, in Sycamore.
Chuck attended Sycamore schools until 11th grade and graduated in 1965 from Genoa-Kingston High School; he served in U.S. Army, 1966-68, including as a medic in Vietnam, 1967. He earned a fire science degree from Kishwaukee College in 1981 while working as firefighter/paramedic for DeKalb Fire Department, 1971-1983. He bought The MidWeek newspaper with wife, Kathy, in January 1982 and owned it until March 2001. He was currently employed as the executive director of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce. Chuck was manager of the DeKalb Elks Lodge from October 2003-05 and manager of Wright Way Pontiac Body Shop from 1969-1971.
As a member of the 25th Infantry Division Wolfhounds, he earned the Purple Heart for wounds received in action June 1, 1967, in Vietnam; the Bronze Star Medal for Heroism in Ground Combat in Vietnam Aug. 3, 1967; the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces in Vietnam from January-December 1967; The Army Commendation Medal for Heroism in Vietnam, July 12, 1967; and the Army Commendation Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster) for Meritorious Achievement in Vietnam, Sept. 17, 1967.
He was a current board member of Suicide Prevention Services in Batavia; current co-chairman of DeKalb Corn Fest Corn Boil, since 1985; chairman of the fund drive for Kishwaukee Community Hospital Atrium for Cardiac Rehabilitation, 2001; chairman, DeKalb County Chapter American Heart Association Heart Walk, 2000; past president, DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, 1985; past president, DeKalb High School Barb Boosters, 1995-1997; committee member, State Senator Brad Burzynski's Annual Golf Outing; and chairman, Boy Scouts of America Fund Drive. He was involved over the years, personally and through The MidWeek, helping various charitable activities, including Salvation Army, Let's Talk Turkey, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Family Service Agency's Big Brothers Big Sisters, Voluntary Action Center, Children's Learning Center, Kishwaukee YMCA, DeKalb Moose Lodge, DeKalb Elks Lodge, DeKalb County VietNow, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
He was the recipient of the Phoenix Award from Suicide Prevention Services, 2007; part of WLBK Radio's Suicide Prevention Program, awarded the Illinois Broadcasters' Silver Dome Award in 2007; Tribute to Heroes Award, Boy Scouts of America, 2006; Kishwaukee Community Hospital Heritage Award, 2003; "Business of the Year Award" from DeKalb Chamber of Commerce while owner of Siebrasse Publications, publisher of The MidWeek and DeKalb County Business. The MidWeek earned more than 100 awards for excellence from professional newspaper associations during the Siebrasses' tenure.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy, of DeKalb; one son, Bradley Siebrasse (Amber Fischer) of Westminster, Colo.; four sisters, Linda (Charlie) Davidson of Sycamore, Lynn (Ken) Dander of Genoa, Carol Storm of DeKalb and Heidi (Scott) Gray of Juneau, Alaska; father-in-law, Don Vance of Broomfield, Colo.; brother-in-law, Craig Vance of Broomfield, Colo.; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews; and a community of loving friends.
He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Siebrasse in 2001; one sister, Penny Bunnell in 2002; his parents and grandparents.
The funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 511 Russell Road in DeKalb, with the Rev. Ray A. Krueger and the Rev. Dean Pierce, DeKalb Fire Department chaplains, officiating. Burial will follow services at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.
