A LIFE WELL LIVED
Malcolm J. (Mac) Maguire, age 76, lifelong resident of Oklahoma City, died at home on April 12 of complications from a chronic illness.
Mac was born April 26, 1936, in Oklahoma City to Hugh and Helen Fitzgibbons Maguire and was the seventh of their nine children.
He attended John Carroll Elementary and Bishop McGuinness High School, where his quick wit and zest for living manifested itself in escapades legendary among his classmates and longtime friends, and which still entertain the younger generations.
On August 8, 1959, Mac married Joan Sampson, his high school sweetheart, partner in life, partner in business, and the mother of his three children, at Christ the King Catholic Church.
They have been married for fifty-three years. After graduating from Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School (formerly Catholic High School) in 1955, Mac attended University of Central Oklahoma (formerly Central State University) in Edmond, where he graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.
Mac began work at age six on such jobs as a construction water boy, and while a teenager, as an oil rig roughneck.
As an adult, he formed Maguire Brothers, Inc., a reconstruction and disaster repair company. Mac operated the business in multiple capacities until his retirement in 2006. A talented man of many interests, he also formed J & M Investment Co. together with his wife, Joan. Mac and Joan maintained several other business entities and foundations, forged numerous community ties, and have generously supported local civic and charitable organizations.
Mac's community, civic, and charitable service included Christ the King Catholic Church (Finance Committee; Building and Grounds Committee Chair), where he helped build the first family center; Bishop McGuinness High School (Board of Directors; Chairman of the Board; Finance Committee; Development Committee Chair); the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City (Special Advisor to Archbishop Beltran; Business Advisory Committee; Pastoral Finance Committee; Special Advisor to Archbishop Salatka); St. Ann Home, which Mac helped to build (Chairman, Board of Directors; Building Committee); Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (Commissioner; Chairman), where he served his love of the outdoors; first Chairman of the Oklahoma Ethics Commission; Oklahoma City County Health Department (Search Committee; Chair, Board of Health); Oklahoma County Finance Authority (Chair, Board of Directors); Oklahoma Academy for State Goals (Executive Committee); Boatman's 1st National Bank of Oklahoma (Board of Directors); Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra (Board of Directors); Petroleum Club of Oklahoma City (Board of Directors; President); and City of Nichols Hills Mayor, Councilman, and Finance Committee Chair.
Among his other honors and awards, Mac received the President's Circle Lifetime Member award from Bishop McGuinness High School, the "State of Excellence" Contributor award from Governor Henry Bellman, and the Honorary County Commission award from the Oklahoma County Commission.
Mac was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, big game hunting, and bird hunting, which he did all through the world. He played as hard as he worked. Mac, Joan, and their family traveled on adventures to such locales as Scotland to play golf, Rome to meet the Pope, New York City for New Year's celebrations, and various beaches.
Mac was known, among other things, for his ability to maintain friendships, many of which were formed as far back as first grade at John Carroll Elementary. Mac and his lifelong friends had lunch together every Tuesday and Thursday until his recent hospitalization. According to a friend of 70 years, Mac is "the only person I know who did all the things he wanted to do in his lifetime."
In addition to his wife Joan, Mac is survived by his three children, all of Oklahoma City: Betsy Maguire O'Hara and husband, Hugh O'Hara; John Sampson Maguire and wife, Melanie; and Amy Fitzgibbons Maguire.
He is also survived by eight grandchildren, whom he adored and of whom he was most proud: Keely O'Hara Dowdall and husband, Tyler Dowdall, Los Angeles, California; Nicholas Kyle O'Hara and Vivian Mallory O'Hara; Delaney Elise Maguire, John S. Maguire, Jr. ("Sam"), and Conner Wrigley Maguire; and Olivia Katherine Amundsen and Maguire Grace Amundsen; all of Oklahoma City.
Mac is survived by siblings: Dr. Phillip Maguire and wife, Wilhelmina; William "Bill" Maguire; Geraldine "Jerry" Rupert; and Charles Maguire; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great- nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by grandson, Ryan Maguire O'Hara; his parents, Hugh and Helen; and siblings, Anthony "Tony" Maguire, Hugh F "Bo" Maguire Jr., Anna "Toddy" Ryan, and Judy Wheat.
Services celebrating Mac's life are as follows: A Rosary and Wake will be held on Monday at 7 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.
In keeping with Mac's wishes, the Irish kid from 31st Street who walked with popes and governors, will be buried in a simple pine casket, handmade by his carpenters.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions, if desired, be made in Mac's memory to Children's Medical Research Institute, 800 Research Parkway, Ste 150, Oklahoma City, OK 73104; and Animal Rescue Friends of Nichols Hills, Inc., 1009 NW 75th St, Nichols Hills, OK 73116.
