August 26, 1880
Cawker City Free Press
- About six o'clock Tuesday evening while
the people of our city were enjoying the
shower which was falling at the time, we
were all suddenly shocked by the announce-
ment, that Thad Jones, the foreman of the
Journal office, had been killed by lightning.
Mr. Jones had just ceased work for the day
and stepped to the door to dip some water
to wash, when the fatal bolt struck him on
the left side of his head and passed over
half way down his body, when attracted by
the roller frame and press standing to his
left, it passed to this mass of metal and in the
press room of the Journal office became
neutralized. Mr. Jones had been married
only three months and his young wife is
almost beside herself with grief. A feeling
of deepest gloom settled over the people
of our city, and all feel the deepest sym-
pathy for the bereaved woman. Mr. Jones
is highly spoken of by all who knew him,
and a faithful man in every respect. There
is only one consolation in his loss, that is,
if he must go, he had died the least painful
death which the hand of the great destroyer
controls.
The funeral services of the deceased was
held at the Methodist Church at ten o'clock
today, and was largely attended.
A copy of the obituary & additional family information is available at the North Central Kansas Genealogical Society, Cawker City, KS , [email protected]
