Wendell was the son of Frederick Henry Cobb and Anna Ellen Stuart Cobb. On 18 September 1937, John Wendell Cobb and Velda Fern Sanders were married in Franklin County, Arkansas.

Alexander "Sanders" Cobb, Wendell's great great grandfather, served in the War of 1812 from South Carolina. 2nd Lt. Miles Gathright, Wendell's 3rd great grandfather, is a documented Daughters of the American Revolution soldier and patriot. Sgt. Simon Gentry, Wemdell's 3rd great grandfather, served in the military during the American Revolution from South Carolina.

On 6 March 2013, a Find A Grave volunteer reported that the grave of John Wendell Cobb is unmarked. Paul Gregory, Cemetery Administrator of Rose Lawn Park Cemetery, indicated that John Wendell Cobb is buried next to Velda Cobb, but the grave is unmarked. The grave was marked by 14 May 2013 when the the headstone photo was placed on Find A Grave.

Six of John's ancestors are documented patriots for Daughters of the American Revolution. These ancestors are Joseph Davenport (SC), Ann Hurst Floyd (VA), John Hurst (VA), Lt. Miles H. Gathright (VA), James Collins (NC) and Major Croom (NC).
