Dr. Alter was well known as a scientific investigator and was among the earliest in discovering the properties of the spectroscope, and his friends claim for him the invention of telegraphy in 1831-32; also, that he experimented with the spectroscope three years before the German scientist, Kirchoff, generally regarded as the inventor of the device.
The deceased was a graduate of the Medical college of Cincinnati, and leaves a wife and family.
