DAVENPORT - William C. Hughes, of Davenport, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at Genesis Medical Center West Campus, Davenport, after a brief illness. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. There will be additional visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the Gathering Space at the church. William Charles Hughes was born Dec. 18, 1924, in Davenport, the son of Ralph Joseph and Gertrude Jennie (Green) Hughes. He married Mary Jayne Block on Sept. 25, 1948, at St. Paul the Apostle Church, where they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. Hughes had been employed for 43 years at Industrial Engineering Equipment Corp., Davenport, where he served as an industrial salesman until his retirement in 1990. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Bill was a member of the church, the Coon Hunters Association at the Oak Hill Gun Club, of which he was a life member, the Moose, Center for Aging Services Inc., Plus 60 and the Durant American Legion. He enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. Memorials may be made to the church or the church building fund. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jayne; and sons and daughters-in-law, John C. Hughes, Davenport, Michael J. and Theresa Hughes, Grand Mound, Iowa, Mark W. Hughes, Davenport, Jeffery J. and Audrey Hughes, Phoenix, and Gary C. Hughes, Davenport; seven grandchildren; and brothers, Robert F. Hughes, Dennis M. Hughes, David D. Hughes, all of Davenport, and Paul R. Hughes, Millington, Tenn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John "Jack," Thomas, Timothy and Ralph. May they Rest in Peace.
