The son of Jacob & Mary "Polly" (Keck) Blaine, in 1850 he lived with his family in Donegal Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania but is not shown in the 1860 census with his family who then resided in Madison Township, Perry County. He stood 5' 4" tall and had dark hair and light eyes. He married Catherine Lebo and fathered Laura J. (b. 08/15/63), Mary Elizabeth (b. 03/10/67 - married Samuel Stiles Jacobs), William Lewis (b. 09/??/68), Frank (b. @1871), Charles G. (b. 08/17/72), and Maggie E. (b. 09/20/74).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 2, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 5 as a private with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865. He is in Bates as "William A. Blain."
