Dorothy Irene "Dottie" Cornwell

Cumberland--Dorothy Irene "Dottie" Cornwell, 94, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cumberland, MD on March 11, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Dorothy Marie (Van Horn) Rice.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Richard Cornwell, who died in 1959, at the age of 41. Dorothy was also predeceased by her brother, Andrew Jackson Rice, Jr. and her sister-in-law, Ruth E. Cornwell.
Dorothy attended Johnson Heights Elementary School, and she graduated from Pennsylvania Avenue High School class of 1935. She was employed at the former A&P Market until the birth of her first child, she then became a stay-at-home Mom until the death of her husband. She was a former employee of Home Mutual Life Insurance Company from 1962 until her retirement in 1980. As a former member of Grace United Methodist Church, Virginia Avenue, Dorothy served as chair and secretary of the Administrative Board, secretary of the United Methodist Women, treasurer of the Ladies Bible Class, Key Person of the Board of Child Care, participated in The New Covenant Group, co-worker of the newsletter, served on the finance committee, and the Rebecca Wagner Scholarship Fund Committee.
When Grace United Methodist Church united with two other churches to form the New Covenant United Methodist Church, Dorothy continued her involvement in many capacities at the church until her death. In addition to her church activities, Dorothy was a member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary, McKinley Chapter #12 Order of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron and was a fifty plus year member, the Past Patrons and Matrons of Western Maryland, and the South Cumberland Business and Civic Association. She also assisted with serving Meals on Wheels, participated in an active study sponsored by Johns Hopkins Hospital of Maryland, and she attended classes at the Center for Continuing Education of Allegany College of Maryland. Dorothy's life was centered around her family and her church. She helped organize a Bible study for residents of the Cascade Apartments, which was conducted by Rev. Dr. Chris Gobrecht, Pastor of the New Covenant United Methodist Church. Serving God and her church was of utmost importance to Dorothy. Her life was a testimony to her Lord Jesus Christ, and she looked forward to seeing him face to face. She is survived by her children: Elaine Long and husband Ronnie, Cumberland; Elizabeth Martin and husband Lou, Sahuarita, AR; and Richard Cornwell and wife Kathy, Cumberland. She is also survived by grandchildren: Mark Long and wife Roseanna; Jennifer McClune and husband Barry; Rodney Long and wife Nancy; Todd Martin; Tessa Bashore and husband Terry; Tara Martin; Matthew Cornwell and wife Whitney; Andrew Cornwell and wife Kayla; and Stacy Wilson and husband Clint. Her great-grandchildren: Brandon Long, Desiree Eilers; Brittany Morgan; Mecaila McClune; Aiden McClune; Jackson Cornwell; Madalyn Cornwell; Kate Cornwell; Kandsely Cornwell. Great-great granddaughter, Adelaide Eilers. Dorothy is also survived by her sister, Virginia Lee Roberson, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews their families, and many dear friends.
The family will receive friends at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. (www.ScarpelliFH.com), 108 Virginia Avenue, on Friday, January 4, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. McKinley Chapter #12 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct their memorial service Friday at 3:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the New Covenant United Methodist Church, Frederick Street, Cumberland, with Rev. Dr. Gobrecht officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park. Pall bearers will be grandsons Mark and Rodney Long; Barry McClune, Todd Martin, Matthew Cornwell, and great grandson Brandon Long.
