When Nancy Elizabeth Kirby was born on February 27, 1853, in Marshall County, Alabama, her father, Francis, was 37 and her mother, Mary Elizabeth Cowan Kirby, was 24.
Her parents called her "Lizzie", a nickname that stayed with her throughout her life as it is the only given name along with her married name upon her headstone, Lizzie Winston.
In 1860 she is living with her parents Frank and Mary in the Eastern Divison of Marshall County Alabama. Lizzie was the middle child of seven children. Twin brothers, Ruben and Rufus were 15, Samuel 13, Milton W 11, Nancy 9 (this is Lizzie) Tempy 7, and Cowan 2. Two boarders, one being a physician were living with the family.
Sometime shortly after the census was taken there was another child born, Francis Marion Kirby and in 1864 Joshua Freeman Kirby joined the family.
In 1866 her mother Mary Elizabeth Cowan Kirby passed away and her father at the age of 52 remarried to 29 year old Mary Anna Ryan on April 16, 1867. Lizzie had a half brother Olway born in 1868.
In the 1870 Marshall County, Alabama census the family looks to be living in separate houses but it is believed to be just an error on the enumerator's record keeping. Frank Kirby, spelled Kerby on the census record, is 55 his new wife Mary A is 29 (another error if she was 29 in 1867 when she married Frank Kirby). His second wife, Mary, carries the same first name as his first wife Mary Cowan and this makes record tracking a bit confusing. Frank and Mary are on one page and the rest of the family continues on the following page and it is believed that the enumerator mistakingly gives them a new household number due to the age of the oldest Kirby boys still living in the household. Reuben Kirby is 24, Samuel is 22, Nancy (Lizzie) is 15, Tempy Jane is 14, Cowan is 12, Francis M Jr is 10 and Joshua is 7. These are the children of Frank and his first wife Mary Cowan and then the rest of the children listed are the children of he and his second wife Mary Ryan, they are, Otway 2, Ida 4 months. The following are listed in this household and carry the Kirby surname, spelled Kerby, Matilda 15, Frank M J 12 and Walter 10 and it is unsure as to who these Kirby's are, possibly siblings of Frank, if indeed their last name was Kirby, the 1870 censuses didn't give relations to the hoh therefore it is purely guesswork, there is also a widower, Benjamin F Cowan age 43 listed as a machanic living with the family as well, the children could be his. Since Frank's first wife was a Cowan before their marriage it is assumed that this is a relative of hers. Also living in the household is a school teacher named Silas Childress. Needless to say even before her marriage Lizzie was no stranger to small children or mulitiple families living under one roof.
According to the 1900 census report and family trees found on ancestry Lizzie married John Gaddis Winston on September 14, 1871.
Before the couples first census as a family would be taken four children would be born. Their first, a daughter, Cora L was born in in 1872. Tempy Ora was born in 1874, Reuben was born in 1876, only to have died the following year. John Gaddis Jr was born in 1878 but would only be counted in one census as he died in 1887 at the age of 9.
In the 1880 Wakefield, Marshall County, Alabama census Nancy is now 28, her husband John is 32. They have 3 children, two daughters, Cora 8 and Tempy 6, a son John Gaddis Jr is 2. Vall Hall listed as a nephew to the head of household who would be Lizzie's father John, is also living with the family and 12 years old. The family has two servants, Lucy who is a black lady and carries the surname of Winston and a white male named John Johnson. There is a William Danvenport living with the family listed as a laborer.
In 1881 another son, Frank Kirby Winston was born. Lizzie named him after her father Frank Kirby.
In 1883 Lizzie gave birth to a daughter, Emma Lucy who passed away at the age of 22.
In 1888 a second son would be named John Gaddis after the son who had passed that carried the same name. John Gaddis was born on December 31, 1888.
Two more children, both boys would be born before the 1900 census count, they were William Overton born in 1889 according to his WWI resgistration, which gave his birth as December 28, 1889 in Guntersville, Marshall County, Alabama and Samuel born in 1892.
In 1900 Lizzie is 47 and John is 53, they have been married 29 years and she tells the enumerator that she has given birth to 9 children, seven of which are still living. In 1900 five of their children are still living at home, a son F. Kirby 18, Lucy E 17, John Gaddis Jr 10, William O 8 and Sam 2. John's brother Edward, a 63 widow is living with the family.
On September 14 1905 Lizzie lost her daughter Lucy Emma "Mamie" Winston. Mamie, her name given on her tombstone, had married R.D. Rivers in 1904.
On July 13, 1906 she laid to rest her husband John. They had been married 35 years.
In 1920 Kirby, Marshall County, Alabama census Lizzie is 69 years old, a widow and living with her son John Gaddis, his wife Ethel and their two children, John G 7 and Core E 3. She is listed as Elizabeth Winston. This will be her last census to be counted in as she passed on November 2, 1926, in Marshall, Alabama, at the age of 73, and was buried there.
