Joseph Coston Snellings was born to Joseph Elmus and Caroline Kent Snellings, he was the 4th child. He was born in Fayettevile Tennessee, the family moved to Gurley Alabama about 1899 where he lived until 1917 when he enlisted in World War 1, he served overseas and sustained and eye injury while in action. He married Josephine "Josie" Hendon on July 14th 1925 in Birmingham. They had one daughter that died at birth in 1927 and a Son, Joseph Coston Jr, born in August 1932.

Funeral services for Joseph Coston Snellings of 2508 Ave H, who died Thursday, were held Saturday at the Ensley Baptist Church. The Rev. Lamar Jackson officiated. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery. Angwin services directing. Mr. Snellings was born March 8th 1893 in Fayetteville Tenn. He came to Birmingham in 1919 after his discharge from the Army. He served 18 months overseas during World War 1, suffering and eye injury in action. During his first 15 years here he operated and auto repair business. For the past 17 years he was employed by the city as a foreman in the street department,. He was a member of the Baraca Class of the Ensley Baptist Church, Masicon Lodge # 560, F&AM aster chapter # 172, OES, and Veterans of Foriegn War. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Josie Snellings, a son, Joseph C Snellings Jr. 3 brothers, Bert of Birmingham, William I. of Virginia, Taylor of Texas and a sister Mrs. Louis (Arabella) Brasier.
