THOMAS ELLIOTT GILMOUR was born on 25 September 1817 in Christian County, Kentucky. He was the fifth of GEORGE and POLLY TERRELL (HICKMAN) GILMOUR's eight children.

With the death of his grandfather, JAMES GILMOUR in November 1834 and his father, GEORGE GILMOUR in October 1835, THOMAS ELLIOTT GILMOUR decided to leave Christian County, Kentucky and join his older brother, JOHN WILSON GILMOUR who had settled in Hancock County, Illinois a couple of years earlier. He bought land in the Durham Township of Hancock County on a section adjacent to his brothers, JOHN WILSON GILMOUR and JAMES LEWIS GILMOUR and is listed as purchasing 80 acres of land on 3 Nov 1840 at Meridian "4th PM - 1815 Hancock, Illinois at Township: 7N Range: 6W Section: 23". He is also listed on the Hancock County 1842 Tax list with his two brothers at "183 7N6W".

THOMAS ELLIOTT GILMOUR was married in Hancock County on 3 March 1842 to MARY A. YOKE and they became the parents of two daughters: SARAH E. GILMOUR, born on 18 January 1842 and ANN GILMOUR, born in 1847. He died in 1850, one year before his brother JOHN WILSON GILMOUR sold his land and departed in covered wagons for the Oregon Territory. Following his death in 1850, his wife MARY and their daughters remained in the Durham Township of Hancock County. There is a marriage record for a "MARY A GILLMORE" to a Rev ANDREW WILLIAMS" on 11 May 1853 and it is very possible that this MARY was THOMAS ELLIOTT GILMOUR's widow. She died on 15 Mar 1854.

RE: the daughters, SARAH E. GILMOUR was married to WILLIAM BENONA MILLS in Hancock County, Illinois on 28 September 1858. ANN GILMOUR was probably married to MOSES MILLS in Hancock County, Illinois on 28 Sep 1862.
