The cemetery is completely fenced. The grounds are mowed and trimmed during the growing season.
The cemetery is located on land purchased by William Richardson from the U.S. Land Office on 01 May 1857 (https://www.bates.mogenweb.org/Cemetery/1038cem.html, accessed 08 Feb 2021). The first burials were prior to the Civil War, as early as 1858 (Cemetery Gravestones). In 1871, Adam Howell, landowner, sold one (1) acre of land for $20 to citizens of Bates County for the purpose of the public use of the land for a burying ground. The deed is dated 06 May 1871 and recorded on 02 Jan 1872 (Virginia, Missouri's Centennial Celebration, History Booklet, 1976).
The cemetery was formerly known as the Adam Howell cemetery. The correct spelling of the name Howell is uncertain. Obituaries and death certificates have noted the name as Howe, Howel, and Howell. In an article detailing Mr. Howell's death, the last name is spelled Howald (Bates County Record, 12 Oct 1878). The location of Mr. Howell's burial is unknown.
