The Westbury Parish Church dates to the time of William the Conqueror who reigned from Dec 25, 1066 to Sep 9, 1087. A church at Westbury was mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086). It is most likely to have been a Saxon wooden church on the same site as the present one.

A new church edifice was erected in 1313, during the reign of Edward II.

This fine Gothic structure was built in the form of a cross. The clock on this church was erected in the second year of James I, 1604. The chimes where the work of Louis and William Cockey, in 1688. The tower of the church contains a fine peal of six bells. The sixth bell weighed five thousand pounds and was the largest bell in the County of Wilts. The fifth and oldest bell has the Arms of England on one side and the Arms of Lord Ley's family on the other side. It was inscribed with this motto:
"Egen gra" The voice of God.
