Dating from as early as 1800, and certainly no later than 1839 when Francisco Lazarine dedicated the land for use as a cemetery, the Lazarine Cemetery is one of the more historic in Nacogdoches County. Originally the Lazarine family cemetery (the first known interment was Francisco Lazarine's father, Juan Maria Lazarin) it soon became the resting place for members of related families represented here as well. Until 1912, when a new cemetery was established in the Moral community, this was the principal burial ground for the old Spanish families of southwest Nacogdoches County.

To walk through this Campo Santo is to reflect on a host of names -- from Arriola and Chireno, to Herrera, Manchaca and y'Barbo -- that played a too-often unsung role in the history of this historic town.

Lazarine cemetery is located 4.2 miles Southwest of Loop 224 in Nacogdoches on the North side of Texas Highway 7 at County Road 715. Driving South from the loop, CR 715 intersects Highway 7 just across from the entrance to the Pine Grove Cemetery; turn right onto CR 715, then immediately again to the right onto an unpaved lane running north beside the Arriola-Cooke Cemetery.

Thanks to Ronald E. Gauntt for his transcription of the interment records for this cemetery.
