|Cemetery notes and/or description:|

**This is NOT the cem. that has been referred to as Captiva or Benson Cem. It should also NOT be confused w/ Captina Church of Christ Cem./Captina Cemetery in Monore Co.**
In 1825 @ this site an African Methodist Episcopal Church was established & continued services until 1962 but the church building no longer exists.
113 known graves (incl. 9 Civil War vets &
1 Mexican-American War Vet) but w/ only 26 total markers (some single & some w/ multiple names) viewable (as 8/2011) that have any readable info.
Last burial in cem: 1972
See photo of Ohio Historical Marker/cemetery sign for further info.
The cemetery is on Oakes Place/Twp. 30 off of Rt. 148/W. Captina Hwy, Belmont Co, OH.
Don't look on Google maps specifically for this cemetery b/c it doesn't exist on their mapping system as a specific location although all rds in this description/driving directions are on it.
Starting IN Barnesville on S.R. 147/Barnesville Bethesda Rd, take S. Chestnut St. which turns into S.R. 800/Somerton Hwy (driving appx SE) & @ the junction of 800 & S.R. 148 go to the left onto 148 (148 is a level rd @ this point but the continuation of 800 is slightly up hill) continue (driving appx SE) & you will pass a little State of OH/ODOT facility on your right, keep going until you see Chestnut Ridge Rd/Twp. 26 on the left (it kind of looks like a private drive & @ this point in time there is a wooden sign shaped like a chicken noting that there is a brown egg farm on that rd) & a few feet later Oakes is on the right (so not exactly across from each other).
The sign saying Oakes is a green street sign & sign saying Twp. 30 is a red square sign; both on same pole on the So. side of the rd. & you will go over a little rd bridge over a creek when you first turn onto the rd....you will go up a hill & @ the top the cemetery is on your right.
