|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Located just outside Ballylongford, this Abbey was marked for destruction during the days of Cromwell, when many abbeys were being destroyed. Cromwell originally pardoned the people of this church and decided not to attack it. But when the monks rang the bells of Lislaughtin for a mass, Cromwell took them to be bells of celebration and returned to the monastery and killed all the monks that didn't escape.
During the years that followed the ruins of the abbey were claimed by locals and turned into plots to bury their loved ones, mainly within the walls of the ruins. [text by Barbara Gillon Lewis]
