This cemetery was originally known as Mt Gerizim. The reference is to the Biblical sacred site of the Samaritans for the worship of God. The Anglicized name is Mt. Garrison Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery, Harrison Co, KY and later the name was changed to Old East Broadwell Cemetery.
In his "Focus on Kentucky Genealogy Old East Broadwell Cemetery in Harrison County, Kentucky" in The Filson Club History Quarterly, July 1990, John Allen Duncan describes the cemetery as "three miles southeast of Cynthiana on Ruddels Mill Road (now State Road 1940)." Mt. Gerizim Church seems to have had great importance to Methodism in Kentucky. Duncan quotes Methodist historian A. H. Redford: "Thousands of souls have been converted to God on its consecrated grounds."
The Church buildings on this site burned - around 1825 and sometime between 1879 and 1889. In the late 1890s, the East Broadwell Elementary School was built on the abandoned site. The school burned and then in November of 1928, the school board sold the property.
