|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Karrakatta Cemetery first opened for burials in 1899. This historic cemetery is the final resting place of many thousands of Western Australians. The cemetery is centrally located just seven kilometres west of Perth city centre and is easily accessible by car or train. However, with no capacity for expansion within the surrounding areas, it was initially anticipated that burial land at Karrakatta would be completely occupied by the early 2000’s.
Karrakatta has older style denominational areas representing 37 religious or ethnic groups, including Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Jewish and Muslim. It also has a number of non-denominational lawn areas. It has a unique Aborignal “Keeping Place” for the remains of indigenous people which have been previously stored in museums around the state and Australia.
The potential decline in income derived from burials combined with the absence of a sustainable renewal initiative, means either limited or no ongoing maintenance or further beautification of this historic cemetery. There have been several issues surrounding this cemetery including reopening a grave to bury an existing family member, expiration of the Grants of Right of Burial.
