The historic cemetery, located next to the Basilica de Guadalupe, was founded in 1660 by the canon doctor, Juan María García Quintana y Ronda, and is older than the city itself. The large iron gate allows a spectacular view of the cemetery.
The majority of the graves are the patrimony of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, (National Institute of Anthropology and History) which preserves, among other works of art, "El Ángel del Silencio" (The Angel of Silence), a XIX century sculpture of crystalline Carrara marble by the Italian sculptor, Adolfo Ponzanelli. It is only possible to gain access to the cemetery with their permission or if you have a legal right to the plot.
