Hitesville Cemetery

There are eleven servicemen buried in Hitesville. From the War of 1812 was Jacob Yost. From the Civil War were Jerry Margretz, George Wintz, Henry Gibson and Joe Considine. From World War I were Ed Langston, Emmet Graves, William Santee, Arthur Yost and Melvin Johnson. From World War II was Elmer Schriever.
Many Hites families were among the first settlers in the area. From these families came the name Hitesville. In 1871, a postoffice was established at Hitesville, with J.S. Margretz as the first postmaster. The office was located in a house on section 19. This office served by a mail carrier was on the route from Aplington to Bristow.
Hitesville Cemetery is a township cemetery for the use of the surrounding territory. It is tax supported and under the direction of three trustees. It has never belonged to any church.
A new fence was erected in 1926 and was replaced in 1964. In 1976 many of the older stones were repaired and reset. This project was financed by solicitations and donations. The Hitesville Cemetery is found in Section 29 of Ripley Township, Butler County, Iowa.
