The Roachdale Cemetery lies in Jackson Township just east of Roachdale on US Highway 236. This is somewhat confusing, since Roachdale is in Franklin Township. The Franklin/Jackson Township line is just east of the Roachdale Town limits.
The Roachdale Cemetery started out as a small family or community cemetery. This original part lies in the northeast corner of the cemetery. The Roachdale Cemetery was originally known as the Lebanon Cemetery. The Lebanon Cemetery Company was formed August 11, 1888 as noted on the early cemetery deeds. The name of the Lebanon Cemetery came about because the county road going north from US 236 just east of the cemetery was once known as the Lebanon road. This road was the main north/south roadway in the 1800's. At the northeast corner of the intersection of US 236 and Co Rd 425E there was a schoolhouse many years ago which was referred to as the Lebanon School. The 1879 Putnam County Atlas indicates there were no homes at all at Roachdale at that time. Until about 1880, the current Roachdale was a crossroads, with a railroad running north and south just west of the crossroads.
On October 16, 1899, Lewis H. and Elizabeth Stewart, and James Edward and Laura A. Crosby, deeded one and one-half acres each to the Lebanon Cemetery Company. The Lebanon Cemetery eventually came to be known as the Roachdale Cemetery. The first cemetery deed granted under the name of the Roachdale Cemetery was to Lurie Perkins dated November 30, 1921. Up to then, deeds were in the name of the Lebanon Cemetery Company.
