On Forge Road, near Wesley Chapel Road, Tinkersville & Mechanicsville, Rockbridge Co., Virginia.
NOV. 2006: As a Paxton descendant I took a trip with my husband to VA in search of family resting places.
When searching for this cemetery it is very easy to miss as it looks like a small grove of trees.
We found the cemetery directly beside and slightly elevated from road level. There was a very steep and narrow roughly made section of steps which led us up into the cemetery. It was overgrown with weeds and vines. Many of the stones were visible and I have added these photographs to this website. Many were to hard to reach because of the overgrowth. Farm fields and a curious heard of goats surrounded the cemetery on three sides. It was a wonderful trip back in time walking among the old family stones.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION: Condensed from source below.
Purchased from Ben. Borden by Joseph Paxton 1746.
Between 1746 and 1935 the property passed down in the Paxton family to Archie Paxton 1924. Probated 1935.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
The Paxton Cemetery was first used in 1750 and last used in 1859. The reason for discontinuing it's use as a buryng ground was that every time a grave was dug and an old grave was disturbed. The owners say it is quite surprising how many graves there are in this plot in comparison to the tombstones. Here are buried the Paxtons, Amales, Templetons and Edmondsons. When the present owner took over the care of the cemetery it was in very bad condition.
