The other parcel is bounded on the North by said Turnpike, and on the other sides by the lands of S.S. Clay, James Scobee, and the Dower lands of Mrs. Mary Wills, supposed to contain about seven acres, more or less, this being in gross and not by the acre."
This cemetery is on the land where the original John Scoby house once sat. The old house's foundation is still visible. The land is now owned by Linda House and her husband. They took pity on the cemetery, in ruins, stones still surrounding the cemetery, but the fence down, so the cattle had easy access to it and were walking all over it. Some stones were still there upright, others were broken by the cows, and some were too old to be readable.
The large stone of Catherine "Kate" Scobee, the daughter of John Scoby, b 1720 in Scotland and his 2nd wife, Dolly. was still upright and in good condition. Her stone reads "About 80 years of age". Linda House often visits and talks with Catherine. Her curiousity about Catherine caused her to email me in 2006 to inquire about her.
Two of the other readable stones are those of Mary Jane Wills Scobee and James Scobee, (son of Daniel Scobee), husband and wife. I'm sure Catherine's mother is there as well.
It is suspected that Daniel Scobee and his wife, Caty Rodgers are buried there, for when they died, between 1825-1830, they lived next door to Catherine, and she took over the care of the children, who are: "Andy", Margaret, Nancy, Daniel, James and John. The kids would want their parents buried here and I'm sure Catherine would as well.
Of all the Scobee children, only James married, and he and Caty had no children of their own, but adopted a daughter, and raised Mary Jane's niece. Probably several of Daniel's children are buried there as well, as they were in the censuses living with Catherine.
Another person I suspect may be there is a lady named Elizabeth Patton. At age 81 in 1850, she was living with Catherine and her sisters. She cared greatly about Ann Boggs' daughter, for at her marriage, she gave her her own prized possessions. Too young to be Catherine's grandmother, I wonder if she isn't perhaps Catherine's maternal aunt or cousin. All that is really known about here is that she was born in Ireland. We know nothing about John's 2nd wife, mother of Catherine, Daniel, Ann Boggs and Dolly Kennedy.
There are several stones on the outside of the ring of stones, probably of the Scobee slaves.
