The Motherhouse is across the street from the Maryknoll Fathers/Brothers headquarters.
The Fathers/Brothers have their own cemetery, however early on in the Orders existance a few sisters were buried there.
It appears that the sisters created their own cemetery in the late 1950s, as per the dates of the sisters who were buried with the Fathers/Brothers.
About The Maryknoll Sisters
Founded in 1912byMother Mary Joseph, Maryknoll Sisters were the first group of Catholic Sisters in the United States to devote their lives in service overseas. Today, we come from diverse cultural backgrounds, serving in a variety of fields including medicine, communications, education, agriculture, social services and spiritual formation.
Maryknoll Sisters come from 29 lands and serve in 26 countries around the world. After handing over most of our schools, hospitals, and other institutions to local lay leaders, we work in smaller numbers in more places and in non-structured ministries such as basic Christian communities, adult education, leadership training, teaching English in China, fostering income-generating projects, and working with people who live with HIV/AIDS.
Our mission center is in Ossining, New York, while the orientation program for new members is in Chicago, Illinois. Women who join the community are trained in a variety of professions, serving as nurses, doctors, teachers, social workers, catechists, theologians, agronomists, artists, journalists and community development specialists.
We try to be sensitive to local needs, searching out with the local people what needs to be done and adapting ourselves to various cultures.
Mission Statement
Maryknoll Sisters are committed to crossing boundaries, whether cultural, social, religious, geographic or economic to proclaim the Good News of the Reign of God.
Membership
While originating as a particular expression of the missionary responsibility of the Church of the United States of America, our membership has been international in character from its earliest days. Although the majority of our members are still from the United States, at least one-fifth come from other countries, including the Philippines, China, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Peru, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan, Bolivia, Colombia, Japan, Switzerland, El Salvador, Ecuador, Vietnam, Scotland, Panama, Canada, Ireland and England.
