|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
The church was built as the German Methodist Episcopal Mission ( a/k/a the Washington Street German Methodist-Episcopal Church) in 1856. Services were conducted there by that congregation until Aug. 1, 1912. The church then served as the Lutheran Mission Church from Thanksgiving Day, 1926 through 1940. The church’s final congregation was the United Christian Church, which operated out of the sanctuary from 1949 through 1969. It is a Town of Hempstead Historical Landmark. The Chapel is the second oldest church structure remaining in Wantagh and surrounding communities, and is one of the few buildings remaining from a time in which the Wantagh area was known as Jerusalem.
Soldiers buried in the church’s cemetery include veterans of the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War.
