|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Gränna Kyrkogård (Cemetery) is located on the Gränna Kyrka (Church) grounds in Gränna which is in Jönköping Municipality on the far northwestern edge of Jönköping County in Småland Province in southern Sweden. Gränna is considered a "locality," for administrative purposes or a "parish" for church purposes. Gränna is, despite its small population, for historical reasons often still referred to as a city. Statistics Sweden, however, only counts localities with more than 10,000 inhabitants a cities.
Gränna is on the eastern shores of Lake Vättern, about 35 km north of the center of Jönköping Municipality. Gränna was founded in 1652 by Count Per Brahehad and had a population of 2,578 in 2005. The town is situated at the foot of Gränna mountain and is characterized by its steep streets, old wooden houses and beautiful, historic scenery.
Gränna's first church was built in the 1100s, but it was devastated by a fire in 1889. However parts like an altar painting, a medieval communion cabinet, a few chandeliers and expensive works were saved and are now in the "new" church which reopened in 1895.
Gränna Kyrka is located in central Gränna and dominates the city's profile. The church is built on the remains of the original stone church from the mid-1100s, the foundations of which are still preserved in the present church floor.
Gränna Kyrkogård is on the church grounds adjacent to Gränna Kyrka.
