Eastern Oklahoma State Hospital Cemetery
Vinita, Craig County, Oklahoma, USA
Eastern Oklahoma Hospital Cemetery was associated with Eastern Oklahoma Hospital for the Insane which was established in 1909. The cemetery is part of 160 acres given to the State by the City of Vinita. For a time the hospital included TB wards in addition to the primary mental health facility. Only patients of the hospital were buried in the cemetery. It is unclear whether TB patients who died at the hospital were also buried in the cemetery or if only the mentally ill patients were allowed to be buried there.
Around 2000 a group of what is believed to have been kids destroyed almost every marker in the cemetery. Only a couple hundred are left and most of those are not with the graves they marked, they were lifted up and flung about. Because records were kept badly by the hospital and most microfilm documentation has deteriorated beyond the ability to read it, it is now impossible to know who was buried where. To find out if a patient was buried in this cemetery you will either need the death certificate or the mortuary records. [this information was obtained from the Oklahoma Forensics Center who took over the cemetery when Eastern Oklahoma State Hospital closed]
