The cemetery was first used in 1913. There are 465 burials.
Some superintendents were Dr. Thomas G. Maghee, G.M. (Glendworth Marion) Willson, C.T. Jones and Dr. Charles E. Lane. These ones have had cottages named after them.
During the depression parents dumped their children off because they couldn't afford them not because they were mentally retarded. For many years the place has been known as Wyoming State Training School or W.S.T.S. Just last year it was changed to Wyoming Life Resource Center. There's a sign that points the road to the cemetery but not sign above the cemetery. A lot of the tombstones were replaced because they were falling apart.
From Wyoming Blue Book: Guide to the State Government and Municipal Archives of Wyoming Volume V, Part II
The Wyoming State Training School, originally named the Wyoming Home of the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic, was established at Lander in 1907, by the state legislature's enactment of Chapter 104, Session Laws of Wyoming. The training school was located on state-owned property which had formely been used for the State Poor Farm. the purpose of the school was to care for the feeble-minded and epileptic.Found out in 1921 it was changed to Wyoming State Training School, so it has had that name for years till law suit in 1990.
Another good article is out of Wyoming State Journal, Wed, July 1, 1987 talking about W.S.T.S. It talks about Dr. Thomas Maghee: first superintendent. The buildings there were named after people there.
