|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Also known as the "Portland Cemetery" in the mid to late 1800s, the Old Pioneer cemetery on Browning Cemetery Road that is still active (burials in 2011 and 2012). The first settler of Portland, OH, Elias Browning, is buried here. The cemetery may be found off a gravel road connecting to Ohio Route 124. There is a sign where the road comes out onto 124 (see photo). The road looks like a driveway. Pass the house on the main road, and just where the road looks like it is going to end at a second house on the right, you must make a left turn past the corn field on the left. and go back another 500 yards or so to the cemetery entrance (see photo). The GPS map will help, but it is easy to miss. There is no back entrance as the cemetery lies on a small bluff above Old Portland Road to the south.
