Andrew Ziegler Cemetery
Also known as Ziegler Cemetery
Roseville, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA
He obtained ownership of the land from the US Government by patent dated November 19, 1812. This patent was issued under authority of Certificate No 743 which originated at the Land Office in Zanesville, and is now on file at the Bureau of Land Management, Eastern States office, 350 South Pickett, Alexandria VA 22304.
At a time before there was any "organized" or church cemetery in that vicinity, a particular space was allotted at a suitable site on the Ziegler property for those who needed a place to lay their deceased loved ones.
The date of the first burial in the Ziegler Cemetery is not known. Not only because of loss by fire of the written records, but also because of the ultimate loss of the original tombstones which had been removed from the site by unknown parties sometime between 1960 and 1970. Burials apparently ceased there after Andrew's second wife, Elizabeth Hewitt, died in 1847.
Andrew Ziegler died at age 80 on June 6, 1839, and in pursuance of stipulations in his will, it was necessary for the property to be sold in order to divide the value of the estate among the heirs, according to his wishes. This was not completed until about 1850.
