|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This cemetery was also known as "Potter's Field" [Death Certificate of David Garroutte and Charlie Featherston]
According to local historian Fred G. Mieswinkel, burials from the Poor Farm aka Almshouse would have started here about 1930. From at least two death certificates, it appears that other indigents in the county were buried at this cemetery as well. It should also be noted that quite a few residents of the "County Farm" in the 1930's and later were buried in other cemeteries.
This cemetery is located in the northeast corner of the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 6, Township 27, Range 28, just west of the Crawford Cemetery, on the west side of the road. This survey was made 21 March 1965, by Fred G. Mieswinkel. [Lawrence County Missouri Tombstone Inscriptions, Volume Two. Mount Vernon and Hoberg Townships. Lawrence County Historical Society]
In 1940, the "Lawrence County Almshouse" in Mt. Vernon Twp. is enumerated on a separate sheet and there doesn't appear to be an on-site manager or operator. It looks as though the first 4 of the 24 people listed are paid to work at the institution. There is no designation as to a head of household nor is there any designation as to any relationship of any kind such as inmate for anyone.
