Cemetery notes and/or description:
Quincy National Cemetery originated as a Civil War-era soldiers lot within Woodland Cemetery. Burials began as early 1861. In 1870 title to the lot was transferred to the U.S. government and in 1882 the site was elevated to the status of a national cemetery. In 1899, the cemetery, and the remains of some 300 soldiers, was moved to the present location, then being a portion of Graceland Cemetery, another private cemetery. In 1936, the site was officially designated as the Quincy National Cemetery. In the mid 20th century, road, residential and commercial developments dissected Graceland Cemetery and the Quincy National Cemetery became an independent and free standing cemetery. This development also had the affect reducing Graceland Cemetery to it's current boundaries.
