Bagong Silang is an area of a large community who live in a graveyard in Manila. Metropolitan Manila is not only a city of 20m people but is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, the lack of space has forced the poorest of the poor to build their homes in all of the 3 main cities cemeteries one of which in particular is Navotas cemetery.
The population has grown considerably over the last 10 years with there now being over 1,000 families crammed into the graveyard and peripheral slums. The cemetery has provided lots of jobs to the residents such as Christina's grave cleaning, Emma's scavenging or Manny, one of the many fishermen in the area living by the sea.
The narrow alleys of the wood and plastic shanty town leads from the tombs to the vast bamboo structures built out into and over the sea, a testament to the resourcefulness of the community living on the margins of society. The communal nature of their lives allows hope to triumph over the poverty that surrounds them.
