|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Wadsworth-Barnes Cemetery is a different burial ground then the Wadsworth Cemetery, better known as the Wadsworth Hall Burying Ground, where General Peleg Wadsworth, his wife, and several children are buried.
Wadsworth-Barnes Cemetery is located on Wadsworth Road, near the junction of the ancient Tripptown-Pequawket Trail Road in Hiram, Oxford County, Maine. The property was once owned by Captain Charles Lee Wadsworth, the eldest son of General Peleg Wadsworth. In 1790, General Wadsworth purchased a grant of 7,800 acres of land in Hiram. He kept 900 acres for himself and later gave 500 acres to his son, Charles. The remaining acreage was sold to settlers at a fair price. In 1795, General Wadsworth built a mansion on the parcel reserved for his son and that house is where Charles and his wife, Ruth, lived and raised their children. The small family burying ground, some caved in cellars, and a few covered wells, is all that remains of Charles Wadsworth's homestead.
