This cemetery of the lutheran Dankes-Congregation is one of five cemeteries located between Humbold Strasse, Gotthardstrasse and Ollenhauser Strasse in the northern Berlin district of Reinickendorf.
The five cemeteries from north to south are:
- Friedhof Reinickendorf II (city owned)
- St. Sebastian Friedhof (Catholic)
- St. Hedwigs Friedhof III (Catholic)
- Nazareth Friedhof II (Lutheran)
- Dankesfriedhof (Lutheran)
The "Kirchhof der Dankesgemeinde" is owned and run by the congregation of the Dankes Church. It's a rather small, park-like cemetery with the size of 46.369 square meters (about 11.5 acres).
It has a main gate at Gotthardstrasse 105, which it shares with the Nazareth Cemetery. Basically a wide ally (an extension of the Kögelstrasse) divides the two cemeteries with the Dankesfriedhof being south of the ally.
Please note that the final resting places in Germany are not eternal, due to lack of space. This cemetery has a "period of repose" of 20 years. Once the time is up for a renewal of the "lease" the cemetery administration will place a small sticker on the gravestone to alert the family to contact the office of the cemetery. Unless the family of the deceased pays for another period of 20 years, or the grave is of historical importance (in that case the city of Berlin will carry the costs), it will be leveled and re-used. Leftover stones will be collected and eventually crushed and used as gravel in road construction.
