The congragation of Gloria Dei was founded in the mid 1600s on Timicum Island by Sven Svenson who donated the land and Col Johan Printz who erected a chapel there for the Swedish immigrants who settled in Delaware County. In 1700, a new chapel and the cemetery was built at its present site and it is said to be one of the oldest in Pennslyvania. It became a National Historical Site in 1942. The cemetery holds both Revolutionary War and Civil War soldiers, sea captains and Swedish immigrants.
