The first burial in the Alt Cemetery was on November 15, 1842, Louisa, the daughter of Alonzo and Maria Denison. The people buried in this cemetery are pioneer settlers of Penn Township. Based on the stones in the cemetery, thirty were buried before the end of the Civil War, fourteen before the end of the century, and six at the beginning of the 20th Century. No more burials were allowed after the last person was buried, Jennie Moore Saunders, in 1921. Two Civil War Veterans, Thomas L. Clark and George Norris, are buried there as well. On April 3, 1922, the trustees of Penn Township accepted a quit claim deed from the Alt family for the cemetery and agreed to maintain it for the future. Previously, you had to get permission to visit the cemetery from the farmer who lived across the road. That farmer has since passed away, and his farm was torn down to make way for housing developments that are being built in front of the cemetery as of 2024. The cemetery is now maintained by the North Liberty Cemetery Board, which plans in the future when a road is erected to start repairing and maintaining the headstones of the people buried there.
